Bank of Scotland called to reverse branch closures

The comments come from Labour Councillor Jamie McGuire who fears that not having an easy-to-access branch will affect many different people.

We previously reported that Bank of Scotland officials came under fire after a decision to close two banks in Renfrewshire.

The politician went on to say that access to branches is important as not everyone will be able to get online to use certain services.

He said: "It is absolutely essential that we have a bank in Renfrew.

"It is shambolic they (Bank of Scotland) have thought about taking the last bank out of the town.

"We need to remember, that it's not all about depositing and withdrawing cash, it allows people to go and get advice and guidance about things such as mortgages and loans.

"The importance of going somewhere and having a discussion with someone can't be understated.

"Yes, you do get services that help online but it is not that simple for some people. 

"Some people don't have access to online, whether they are elderly and they don't know how to work it or they don't have access to the technology."

Bank of Scotland announced the decision to close the banks in both Renfrew and Bridge of Weir earlier this month which was met with backlash.

It is estimated that now over 70,000 people in both town and village will be left with only two banks of any kind.

The reason for the closure is stated on their website said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.

"Most customers are now using our mobile app, internet banking or calling us instead, which means they are using branches, including the Renfrew branch much less.

"This means we'll be closing the Renfrew branch."

Gavin Newlands, MSP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, had raised the issue in Westminster in London as he presented a petition to other elected members. that aims to tackle bank closures.

Over 800 people signed the sheet which voiced concerns about the lack of facilities in the region and looked for Bank of Scotland to overturn their recent decision.

The SNP politician said: "Last night I presented my petition on behalf of the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire North calling on Bank of Scotland/Lloyds to reverse their decision to close their branches currently serving Renfrew and Bridge of Weir, leaving 70,000 constituents with only two branches of any bank at all.

Thanks to the over 800 people who signed the petition in a very short space of time and showed the strength of feeling over these closures.

"I am continuing dialogue with Lloyds/Bank of Scotland over the closures in the hope that even at this late stage they can be averted - but I have also started the process requesting banking hubs be set up in both Renfrew and Bridge of Weir to provide services that will be lost if these two branches go."
