A Renfrewshire MP has described the decision to close St James Business Centre as a "little bizarre".

Gavin Newlands, the SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, let his feelings known after learning about the plans.

We previously reported that the Linwood site will be closing its doors with those based in the complex reportedly being told to move out by April 9.

Now, Gavin Newlands has said that despite reports of the building set to be demolished there have been no applications for either a demolition or anything which might replace it.

In a post on Facebook, he said: "I was very concerned to learn of plans to close the St James Business Centre in Linwood.

"The building itself is home to 48 businesses, many of whom have invested significant sums within their business premises and had long-term plans there, but were given just two months' notice to leave as the owners plan to demolish the building.

"This has come completely out of the blue and the vast majority have no immediate alternative plans to resite their business.

"There are many rumours flying around as to what the future plans for the site may be, but there are no applications in for either demolition or anything which might replace it.

"It’s all a little bizarre."

The parliamentary representative has also confirmed that he has written to the Jesery-based owners to "challenge" the decision and in particular the "manner" in which it has been done.

He continued by saying: "Rest assured I will continue to liaise with the various parties involved and make clear the deep misgivings I have on seeing this building closed in the timescale set out by the owners."

St James Business Centre has been contacted for comment.
