A LOCAL councillor has hit out at the lack of notice regarding the decision to close a vital business centre.

We previously reported that the owners of St James Business Centre in Linwood informed tenants they will need to be out by April 9.

It is believed around 48 business owners are now searching for a new base.

The Gazette: Councillor David McGonigle said: "This is absolutely devastating news and will undoubtedly have come as a shock to businesses and employees who are based there.

“It is completely unacceptable that this news appears to have come totally out the blue."

The councillor, for Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, also described the move as a "hammer blow" for the area.

He said: "If these closures go ahead in a matter of weeks, it will be a hammer blow for Linwood, surrounding areas, and the local economy, at a time when many people are already struggling.

“The owners of the business centre cannot keep local people in the dark. They must be upfront about what is ultimately going to happen here and what it will mean for those based at St James'.”

In a letter, seen by the Renfrewshire Gazette, the owners claimed the reason for the closure is due to the building "reaching the end of its economic life span".

Councillor Audrey Doig added: "I am so disappointed to hear this news. I would advise the businesses to contact the council's business support team for their assistance to relocate within Renfrewshire."

A spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council said: “We were not given any warning of the closure of St James Business Centre.

“We will do everything we can to support local businesses impacted by this closure and have already been in touch to offer help and support. We will also have staff at the centre on Wednesday to offer further support and advice to those affected.”

St James Business Centre has been contacted for comment.
