A PAISLEY schoolgirl has waved goodbye to her long locks to support a good cause.

Karlie Gilmour has donated around 13 inches of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

The 10-year-old said she was feeling "happy" after getting her hair cut at Emulate Hair Studio, in Lyon Road, Linwood, on Thursday, July 20.

Karlie told The Gazette: "I wanted to do it because my hair was getting long and very heavy for me.

"Getting my hair cut was amazing and I hope that it makes a little boy or girl smile a lot."

The St Paul's Primary pupil was accompanied by her mum Lynette, dad Thomas and little sister Malyn during the special event, which was also attended by Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron.

She was given the honour of cutting the first lock of hair before hairdresser Elaine Muir was put in charge of the clippers.

Lynette said she "could not be any prouder" of her daughter, who came up with the idea to donate her hair to charity by herself.

She added: "To just do it off her own back, it's just amazing, and she did quite a lot of research into it as well.

"Karlie had such a fantastic day and somebody donated some pink hair extensions so she could get them fitted in to mark the occasion.

"I just can't believe how generous and kind everybody has been to achieve this cause and I couldn't be any more grateful."

The family, who live in the Foxbar area of Paisley, has also set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for the Little Princess Trust.

It has already raised £615 – beyond its £550 target - with Karlie's dad and aunt collecting further donations from colleagues at their workplaces.

On the JustGiving page, floods of comments have praised Karlie for her generous actions.
