A MINISTER has described controversial plans to close an historic church as a “big mistake.”

Members of Johnstone High Parish Church were left stunned after being told their place of worship could be shut in a bid to cut costs.

The Church of Scotland has recommended that the B-listed building, opposite Ludovic Square, should be merged with Elderslie Kirk.

However, the Reverend Ann McCool has hit out at the “short-sighted” proposals.

She told The Gazette: “The town would be the poorer without Johnstone High Church and I think they are making a big mistake.

“We’re trying our best to get them to reverse their decision and we have politicians and local business people who are supporting us.

“The church is a beautiful B-listed building in the centre of the town, with a big congregation and good suite of halls.

“We are very community-minded and host organisations that do so many things.”

Various local rehabilitation groups use the church for meetings on alcohol, drug and mental health issues.

Renfrewshire Council, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the Boys’ Brigade also host events at the large building, which can seat up to 900 people.

A petition launched in a bid to save the church, which was built in 1792, has gained more than 600 signatures.

Rev McCool added: “The building is in good condition and we always pay all our dues, so the plan seems short-sighted to me.

“We’re not keeping the building open just because it is old but because it is thriving and active.”

A Church of Scotland spokesman said the Clyde Presbytery is in the process of working through a five-year mission plan to allocate limited resources to parishes.

He added: “No final decisions have been taken and proposals set out in the draft plan could be changed as the process continues.

“Discussions are still underway and Clyde Presbytery is not expected to formally approve its mission plan before February 2023.

“Buildings deemed no longer fit for purpose for mission work will be released at some point during the five-year lifespan of an approved plan.

“The Church understands that decisions that will eventually be made will be difficult for some people and will act in good faith to ensure sensitive transfer of use/ownership.”
