A MOTHER has won a bid to make the roads safer at Gleniffer Braes in Paisley where her young daughter was killed in a car crash.

Niree Johnstone tragically died in an accident aged five, at the junction of Sergeant Law Road and Gleniffer Road earlier this month.

Since the crash her heartbroken mother petitioned to make the area safer to prevent another family going through the same devastation as hers.

Cheryl Johnstone's month of campaigning has paid off as the council has now introduced plans to cut the speed limit at Gleniffer Road.

The move follows a number of recent incidents at the junction between Sergeantlaw Road and Gleniffer Road.

Councillor Eddie Devine, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board said: “Niree’s death was a tragedy and our sympathies are with her family.

"We can’t pre-empt the results of the inquiry into the accident in which she died, but this council is determined to do all it can to ensure the road is as safe as it can be for drivers.

“Council officers have started work on a Road Traffic Regulation Order which is intended to reduce the speed limit on Gleniffer Road from 60mph to 40mph.

"This will  require consultation with bodies such as Police Scotland and normally takes around four months.

"While this council is doing all it can to improve road safety across Renfrewshire, I would emphasise to motorists that it is vital that they match their driving to the road and weather conditions both for their own safety and the safety of others."
